Debunking Myths About AI in the Newsroom
A couple of weeks ago, I was asked to share my experiences and opinion on the state and future of AI in the context of journalism‘s business and praxis. The final report “New powers, new responsibilities” by the London School of Economics and Political Science, the Polis think tank and Google‘s News Initiative is now public and sketches out a somewhat expected picture. Strategies, implementations, and ideas vary widely across the industry but are mostly focused on supporting the work of journalists, personalizing content and improving business efficiency.
If you‘re working in the news industry or are interested in this field of AI, I highly encourage you to at least skim the report or the executive summary. What I‘d like to do here, is to add some of my thoughts on the report as a whole, within the context of my work at the innovation team of the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
1. No-one knows what “AI” actually is.
The problem isn‘t the lack of definitions, but their abundance. Or as one interviewee in the “An AI Pattern Language” report by Data & Society put it:
If I walked into a room and said, “We‘re going to talk about an artificial intelligent personal assistant,” nearly everyone would have a picture in their head. The problem is everybody‘s picture would be different.
The report itself uses the following rather broad definition:
Artificial intelligence is a collection of ideas, technologies, and techniques that relate to a computer system‘s capacity to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence.
Or to be more precise; there isn‘t an “artificial intelligence”, there‘s just the field of artificial intelligence and unfortunately, its borders are not well defined. As a consequence, we can find a lot of weird ideas around what AI is, what it can do and might be able to in the future. Imaginations of AI mostly originate in three separate, but connected fields: science, science fiction, and speculation. As a consequence, the stories around actual AI in the form of machine learning are most of the time wildly off target and highly misleading. No-one seems to bother to distinguish between the Terminator, Elon Musk‘s fantasies and the mostly mundane state of the field. Don‘t get me wrong, there are some real and exciting advances to be found here, BUT those have nothing in common with any Sci-fi scenario, except for the name.
The media is, of course, a willing accomplice in muddling the narrative and in turn falls itself victim to the same confusion when it comes to talking ”AI strategy”. Which is why you‘ll find ideas like “exponential growth”, “super AI” and “Robot journalists” being uttered on the stages of media industry conferences. (Though, to be fair: there are “robot journalist”, but those are strictly template-based and not at all able to write well-researched articles and no that won‘t change in the near future.)

This is where we get to my first tip if you find yourself in the position of formulating an “AI strategy“: start with language. Define the term as narrowly as possible, avoid “AI” and don‘t step into the trap of possible big future AI applications. Focus on the little futures — the smaller, daily and mundane tasks you‘re going to tackle. Hype might help sell your idea, but will hurt you in the long-term, because you won‘t be able to build your promised futures.
2. The problem with personalization
A lot of interviewees also talked about personalized content, mostly under the term of “relevant content”, which will be made possible by the application of AI to the historic user-data.
Again I think this framing is a bit off to some degree. Especially, if it‘s put into the same bucket as “user-centric design”. Because let‘s be clear: Personalization by an algorithm without the user‘s explicit control is not user-centric or user-friendly. It‘s business-friendly. The idea of showing “relevant” content by algorithm is a red-herring. What you‘re actually trying to do is to keep users on your website or in your app. You‘re trying to optimize for the time spent, not actual interest.
Let‘s just be honest with our intentions here. Everytime someone talks about “relevant content”, keep in mind there is no such thing as objective “relevance”. Just highly subjective approximations. Always ask yourself: relevant for whom? And by what metric?
3. The thing with efficiency
At the end, let‘s talk about the other big horror AI-scenario: mass job-loss. It‘s an all-time favorite, right next to the enslavement or extinction of humanity. I won‘t get into the weeds of dissecting forecasts or studies, but I want to give you a small mental model, that might help to better understand the topic at hand.
- Automation doesn‘t happen on the job-level, but the task-level.
- Automation doesn‘t strictly mean human replacement, but also augmenting given tasks.
- Automation will always need maintenance, updates, and upgrades. There is not a date X, where the process is finished.
- Automation happens, if it‘s economically beneficial, not when it‘s technically feasible. It‘s—of course—the product and producer of capitalism.
Why are those four things important? Well, if you want to reduce the anxieties of your colleagues of possible firings, you should start by painting a more realistic and boring picture of automation. This is especially important in knowledge work, such as journalism. Yes, there might be fewer human translators or transcribers in the future, but this, in turn, will make the reporting better sourced and faster. Yes, you can automate simple reports of earthquakes, election results or the weather — but this will free reporters to go out and report on the ground. And of course, you won‘t have to dig through millions and millions of leaked documents by yourself — instead, you can get to the heart of the story faster. You get the gist.
Though, to be fair… speedy research, transcription or translation might not result in more time for a single story, but could also mean a higher number of stories, to be written in the same amount of time. But that‘s a thing you‘ll have to discuss with your boss.
Yes, I know this article might not sound like it, but I am fairly convinced machine learning (a.k.a. “AI“) will have real impact on journalism as a praxis and as a business. It most likely won‘t be as “revolutionary” or “disruptive” as some would like you to believe, but it will be exciting. But please be honest in what you‘re selling inside your newsroom or to a newsroom. Be thoughtful of the words you‘re using to talk to your colleagues and avoid building hype if you can‘t back it up.
